Kindred Spirit

Star Light, Star Bright

A momentary glance at you

A quick smile exchange

And my desire to speak to anyone else

Right now just fades.

Because you are enough.

Almost everyone else is just extra.

Your kindness, your gentle eyes,

Takes me to another era –

Where I never stopped being a little girl

And you never lost that childish smile

Where we can both freely say what’s on our minds,

Unfiltered; at least for that mini while.

I may not even know you long enough

Or well enough to call this fond feeling a pure love

But what can I do if my heart has decided you are a kindred spirit

Angelically sent into my world with the function to uplift

Even when we talk of subjects dark, grim, and unpleasant,

Your company alone is still one of life’s most marvelous presents.

Upon running into you,

I only wish you knew

The way I instantly feel

A flurry of excitement

But also a calmness more real.

A minute before you walked in my day,

I felt like I had a million things to say

A minute after you left, I felt my socializing was done

For the day.

Not because you drain me

But because I feel fulfilled

Full to the brim with contentment

At this kindred spirit friendship, so splendid.

We may be from different worlds

I don’t expect them to always synergetically collide

But when they do, it blows my mind

And when they don’t, regardless,

I feel happy and blessed

To know someone that uplifts by a simple smile,

Even if I only see you once a very long while.

It suffices to enrich my life,

Because you are so enough.

البركة في القلة – Blessings Are In The Few

البركة في القلة

Blessings are in the few…

Few (purposeful) words,

Few (strong) minds,

Few (pious) souls,

Few (sincere) hearts,

Few (gratefully used) minutes,

Few (worldly) attachments…

Less can be more.

More clarity expressed in a succinct message,

More worthy actions sprung from cultivated minds,

More moments of soft enchantment seen from the lens of true piety,

More meaningful deeds blossomed from a sincere core,

More productivity accomplished in a shorter spam of blessed time,

More attachment to the eternal One when detached from all temporary else…

Indeed, blessings are in the few;

Less can be more;

البركة في القلة.

In This Wonderful Grand City

Here we are living,
In this wonderful grand city
Some of us bursting with pride,
Ignorance, or wallowing in self-pity.
With the multitude of problems in this universe
One might scoff at the idea of performing verse
For we confuse doing a little as an objective so brittle
And so let’s just go ahead and belittle –
Whatever minor act of good is out there
Because with their grand scheme of a victory, it just doesn’t compare.-

But instead of judging who’s doing more or less
Know that time in incremental bits passes
And before you know it,
To make it all fit,
You start asking yourself,
All certainty on shelf –
Am I here to make change, or am I here to make a name?
An ensemble of basic settlers
That came from a land of alphabetic letters
A simple initially empty word
That soon creates a crowded world… A name.-

Now allow your imagination to run amiss
And try really hard to picture this:
You stumble on a name of someone gone
Yet the name bears a legacy as bright as the dawn…
The name is associated with success & cleverness
The name is associated with intelligence & self-agence… A name.
This name becomes a brand, leaves a mark where it lands
The name was given life after the named left this life
A simple ensemble of lines called single letters
Meaningless at birth but meaningful seemingly forever– A name.
And everywhere you encounter this name
Always honored in some fancy hall of fame
Now take your imagination one step higher
Be ready for this – because baby, you’re on fire! –
Picture for a moment it’s not just a name…
But it’s your name.

Are you perfectly satisfied now?
Do you feel this was the answer to your life’s how?
If you made a name out of real change, then I’m really happy for you
But if you made “change” out of a name, then please let me break through,
And say that your reason of being
Exactly who you are
Was to develop skills, talents,
And let them take you quite far
Take you farther than yourself
Into the real world we call a mess
Seek out from cursed days moments blessed,
And where you cannot find none, you create
Not daring to belittle any deed,
Lest it may be most great —

So maybe you’ll leave behind nothing but fame
And consider yourself hence having won at life’s game
Or maybe you will leave one good, powerful memory
For someone that no one knows
No one cares about, no one needs,
But little had you known that that incremental small act of kindness,
Was only the seed
Starting as fleeting and spontaneously quick as time itself,
Of something great
Occurring perhaps a little later
But perfectly aligned with fate.-

Change for sublime takes its own sweet time
Progress is a slow and steady process
As if made from soft soap,
Patience and hope are found on a slippery slope
But everything within your capacity
Is in tune with real achievability
So forget about the name,
Forget about the fame,
And go make some change,
Regardless where you be
Especially in this wonderful grand city.

A Time of Polar Opposites

It is a time of things old,

A time of things new;

It is a time of grey skies,

And a time of skies blue.

It is a time of gradual beginnings,

A time of abrupt endings;

It is a time of knowing to be bold

And a time of self-surrendering.

It is a time of dreams come true,

A time of hopes and lives destroyed;

It is a time of scientific admiration,

And a time of environment annoyed.

It is a time of spontaneous bursts of love,

A time of inexplicable impulsive hate;

It is a time of refusing to submit to reality,

And a time of embracing what brings fate.

It is a time of promising failures,

A time of unfortunate successes;

It is a time of lack of resources,

And a time of cruel excesses.

It is a time of needless luxuries,

A time of great need;

It is a time of loving charity,

And a time of ruthless greed.

It is a time of deep fulfillment,

A time of endless longing;

It is a time of painful alienation,

And a time of finally belonging.

It is a time of times light,

A time of times dark;

It is a time of deadened hearts,

And a time of souls sparked.

It is, alas,

A time of polar opposites;

And we must strive to grow, love and flourish,

Somehow, inside of it.

And God knows Best.

Water Is Patient

~ “Water does not resist. Water flows.

When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress.

Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it.

Water is patient.

Dripping water can wear away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water.”

(Margaret Atwood)

Life’s Plot Twists

f15 f16

I read an amusing quote this morning that made the writer in me smile:

“When something goes wrong in your life, just yell, “Plot twist!” and move on.”

I really liked it. As I had just completed reading Pride and Prejudice this morning, it all rang more in my mind. Upon editing some photographs I took over the weekend, it occurred to me that the combination above of the two photos can visually summarize the ‘life is full of plot twists’ notion…

Sometimes you think you’re at the top of the world – internal Superman – with your facts, smugness, and attitude; only for some concealed points to be revealed. Suddenly your situation is flipped upside down on its head so abruptly in a dramatic “plot twist”. Somehow you’re still standing, but you’re confused where you now stand and it all seems a bit absurd. Your prejudices are made apparent to you, and maybe even your pride.

Your life story is a plot, and whenever your expectations or assumptions are shunned, a plot twist of some sort occurs. Good or bad, they are worth living. And besides – they were always meant to live. Ali Ibn Abi Talib said,

“Oh God, when I lose my hopes and plans, help me remember that Your love is greater than my disappointments, and Your plans for my life are better than my dreams.”

I await to see what the next chapter of my life holds.

And God knows Best.
