Beauty Can Be Cruel

Beauty can be cruel
In all the right ways.
I normally love this season, but these days…
As I breathe in the freshness of autumn,
As I drink in all the hues
As I savour colors of warmth from leaves
Skies adorned with all shades of blues
I can’t help but wonder
At how majestic beauty can be so cruel.

All these colours, ever transitioning
Mock my black and white feelings
Numb… then exuberant joy… numb… then intensely sorrowful
The canvas of colours
Mocks my tendency right now to just feel awful.
And that sun! Glorious and high
Mocks the solid darkness lurking inside
And the wind; pure, clear and uplifting
Mocks the fact I feel I am drowning.
You see, it is the first gorgeous season
I experience without you.
Put aside black and white,
Can anyone blame me for feeling a little navy blue?

But I need this.
If mocking me is the only renewable fuel
To pull me out of deep waters
Then by all means, let the beauty of autumn
Continue to be cruel.

Standing the Test of Time

Old Original Masjid Al-Aqsa - Ancient Pillars

I’ve travelled across certain parts

Of the East and West

And witnessed that which

Boldly stands and passes time’s test.

Whether I saw the confident

Waterfalls of Niagara Falls

Or the humbling mountains

In Palestine, proud and tall

Or the talented clouds that softly dance

Across the skies

And beautifully play with the sun,

Lingering behind them in disguise…

Immediately,

What comes to mind

Is how these creations

Stood, and passed, the test of time.

Whether I saw the ancient powerful

Pillars of the Masjid al-Aqsa

Or the Aya-Sofya and Blue Mosque

In Turkey, full of awe

Or the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem…

I notice one thing all these

Man-made structures have in common…

They stood their ground

Through rain and sunshine

I can only marvel at how

They passed the test of time.

Beyond Beauty

The architects of sacred buildings

Thought not of modernly dull designs

They contemplated a timeless beauty

That revealed their reverence for the Divine.

And beauty…

When it is pure beauty sublime…

Stands… demands…

And passes the test of time.

Rocky mountains and vast oceans

Cheerful birds and ringed wise trees

Fruits of all colours and degrees of flavors

Loyal horses and honeybees…

They exist to glorify their Creator

By doing what they were always meant to do

What it means to finally catch the truth

Is to learn how to be true, to you.

His creation alone puts

In our chests

Instant feelings of humility, sincerity

And tranquil rest.

And sincerity…

When it is true sincerity… shines.

And it can stand

And pass, the test of time.

As for myself, I wonder

Will I pass the test of time?

Will who I am assemble to become a lasting poem

Or am I to be as insignificant as a silly rhyme?

Will my actions

And my words

Both the spoken

And unheard…

Will my thoughts

And my beliefs

Moments of joy,

Moments of grief…

Through and with them,

Will it end in cause of praise or condemn?

Will my minuscule deeds of goodness

Live on even when I am lifeless?

All these miracles and signs around us

Showing us what it means to pass

The test of a lifetime

If only I can always be aware

That I have yet to pass

Life’s test of mine.

Speeding Along

And Allah (God) knows Best.

The Astonishing Thing

The astonishing thing about certain people

Is that they’re not very much like all other people.

Image

Some people are like the sparkling starry sky

Who continue to shine out and reflect in mortals’ eyes

Years long after they’ve gone down the road

Who even in the distance, make an impression bold

A star that persists to burn brightest

Even when the nights are darkest –

Yes,
Some people are like stars.

Some people are like the mountainous landscapes

But whose greatness is determined neither by size nor strength

But rather by noble and quiet deed

Upon the praising of God do their souls deliciously feed

A mountain that maintains its pegs in the mantle below

While peaking upwards to the sky, aspiring further to go –

Yes,

Some people are like mountains.

Some people are like a luscious forest of trees

Whose roots are firmly grounded to earth, in humility

Whose hearts experience rebirth, seeking His Majesty

A tree that starts from a seed, and soon, behold

Its mysteries contained of beauty and stories of old –

Yes,

Some people are like trees.

Some people are like the soothing wind

A cool gentle breeze, just as soon as you please

A wind that takes one’s breath away

Whose wisdom makes one’s thoughts joyfully stray

(And since the breeze don’t show it,

Of its awesomeness, it don’t know it) –

Yes,

Some people are like the wind.

All people are like people,

But some people are beyond

Some people are like the guiding stars,

The glorious mountains,

The fruitful trees,

The merciful breeze,

And all things in this world that God makes beautiful.

Yes,

Some people are all these things,

And some people are more, too

For what’s most astonishing of all,

Is that some people,

Are you.

Her Beauty Quest

~

I was asked to perform some spoken word at the Pearls of the World Fashion Show this evening. I realized none of my poetry is really girly-orientated… so I whipped this up on the city bus yesterday (trying to ignore the fact the woman next to me was reading every word I wrote over my shoulder the whole time).

Her Beauty Quest

beauty quest

She spends her entire life seeking it

Searching, dreaming,

Paying all she has for it–

But she still hasn’t found it.

She can’t find it

By looking in the wrong place

Some misconceptions won’t let her move forward

Unless them she’d erase–

Now:

Allow

Me to tell you

What

They tell her.

They tell her

True beauty means she must

Look like that girl, that actress

Always compare herself to them

And always them to impress

Be as skinny as a twig

Change hair styles like a wig

Eyeshadow colors that gives off a look of bruised eyes

Seems ugly is the new beauty –  magazines can’t lie!

They tell her

She would be more kissable if she puffed up those lips

Practically grow claws on her fingertips

Be more successful with a little cleavage showing

Wear super short skirts even when it’s snowing–

When they told her such

She obeyed them, pretty much

She read up on every fashion news feed

Spent SO much money on cosmetics in greed

But so much time passes, and she sees no result

She still feels so insecure; could she be at fault?

Why wasn’t there improvement, even slight as sprinkles?

Nothing to show her efforts except, well– some early wrinkles

They told her to be beautiful

She must embark on this superficial beauty quest

But a wise man once said that physical beauty

Is merely a stepping stone to pass the real test

If she’d only say,

With an open heart everyday:

Oh Allah, as You have made my appearance beautiful, make my character beautiful.”

Now this begs the question:

How could you find something you don’t know you already have?

drop perfect

Physical beautiful will eventually pass

Unless it’s retained with good character in a tight grasp

So why would she want what fades

Without seeking also what lasts?

And she is beautiful now

If she would only allow

Herself to embark on a real beauty quest

To seek out the type that will outshine the rest…

BEAUTY

Comes from confidence in herself

Because she knows Who’s got her back

Comes from a nurtured intellect

To keep her on the right track

BEAUTY

Comes from eyes that see blessings

That shed tears when she repents from sinning

Comes from a heart that can empathize, and deeply feel

A heart that results in actions sincere, genuine and real

BEAUTY

Comes from a tongue that speaks kindness

That won’t allow any filth to touch it like gossip

Comes with a wise spirit, from listening and acting right

With a sharp mind that won’t accept being manipulated without a fight

It comes from contemplation, self-knowledge and strong faith

BEAUTY comes in so many forms that all combine to create…

— YOU.

Live The Question

Live The Question

“I beg you, to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.” (Rainer Rilke)

What Beauty Is

Beauty Is…

The sharp crunch of a leaf,

red-yellow under your feet

the crisp air of morning hours

the endless colors of all flowers

the exciting sensation of deja-vu

quand tu marches dans une nouvelle rue

it’s the gentle pounding that you get

when your hand touches your chest

the constant beating of your heart,

with no effort on your part–

Image

Beauty is…

The steady patter of the rain

as it goes down the sewer drain

reminding you that with love

come the blessings from above

it’s the sound of a laugh

finding your other better half

it’s the song of a bird

those touching words that you heard

it’s the curve of a smile

that you’ve craved for a while–

Beauty is…

The confidence of an animal in the wild

the innocent sincerity of a child

the softest touch of a mother

a surprise hug from a brother

it’s a father’s warm, gentle gaze

helping someone through a maze

it’s the bond between sisters

of the likes I’ve never known

it’s in friendships so strong

you can’t ever feel alone–

Beauty is…

The balance human beings have

to stand straight on two feet

it’s the magic of the pen

to realize ideas on a sheet

it’s how humans from different

worlds can relate,

it’s your kind neighbour

and supportive classmate

it’s the patience

remarkable people go through

in situations so mind-boggling

you only wonder what you’d do–

Beauty is…

Found in visiting someplace you’ve missed

undeniable in that priceless moment of bliss

in the silent loudness of a sound

as you prostrate with your head on the ground

the sparkling tears of joy from one’s eyes

the discovery of deep truth among the lies

it’s in the unique snowflakes

with their meticulous design

it’s in looking through a microscope

at nature’s details so fine–

Beauty is…

Praying in the woods

among fall leaves and the trees

It’s that sweet smooth loving caress

on your cheeks from the breeze

Beauty is not found in make-up,

nor found through luxurious gates

it’s a universal blessing that many

forget to contemplate–

Now I’m not sure how to end this,

Cuz this topic is quite endless…

Simply put– Beauty is serenity

It’s the peace found within you

it’s no wonder now that we say

Salamu alaikum, Peace be upon you…

So may you find on this day

Colorful wonders out of the gray

You have all the beauty that you need

To satisfy your soul’s spiritual need,

After all, God is sprinkling on us some of His Beauty

And to appreciate it is the least of our duty…. ~
